WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said on Tuesday he thinks a solution will be worked out to avoid punitive tariffs on Mexican goods as he sidestepped a question on whether Republican lawmakers would seek to block President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs.
“I believe at the end of the day we will get to a solution,” he told reporters. McCarthy said he believed the best outcome would be for Mexico to “assist us” with the immigration situation at the southern U.S. border. Trump last week said the U.S. would impose new tariffs on Mexican goods beginning June 10 if Mexico did not halt a surge in the U.S-bound immigrants.
